By Berestechko, 2008, 6×6 inches, oil on gessoed board
Last year we went by Berestechko in West Ukraine, where they stage an annual festival of singing and folk events. Berestechko is a famous site of a kossak battle, on the grounds of an ancient monastery surrounded by a moat and full of underground passages.

We stayed in the house on the right once during our visit to Lviv. 17th century house - got to be charming and all, right? Well, the tram tracks are quiet indeed as the landlord promised us, but the cat piss and very rickety stairs to the top floor are no joy. In my recent epic apartment hunt I found out though that surprisingly, many historic buildings in London are not kept up either, so can’t blame it on Ukrainians’ aesthetics alone.
Today attended a life drawing session at the Candida gallery, here are the results.

Yesterday popped into the Dutch painters rooms at the NGA in preparation for the upcoming Amsterdam trip this weekend. Their genre paintings are so beautiful.

There is this field outside of little village in the West Ukraine where strawberries grow wild (they are these tiny things, probably have their own proper name but I can’t think of it right now). This picture is an ultimate Ukrainian summer past time- picking berries and taking in the sun. Writing this while it rains in London third day in a row now, sigh.

The ladies cooking pancakes in this typical open oven you see on every Paris corner are dressed in full Ukrainian traditional dress. They are sticklers to their 15 minute breaks and usually collect long ques of customers in between. The top seller filling is the cabbage and mushroom, kvas also available on tap along with some tried and trusted Obolon beer you can enjoy, sitting in the park.
I picked this lady for her bangs - so perfectly appointed and colored - blesk!

Summer in full swing and I have not visited my farm outside of Lutsk just yet. Feel very sad and looking for tickets to come home soon. There is a proper water pump there by the way, even if no tap, it gets used so rarely though, that well still seems to be the optimal choice for getting water. The water in it is tasty and soft, since there is tons of clay in the ground. Lots of potters used to dig up their clay in the woods nearby until very recently.

I took this tram once for the experience, they should be only offered tourists - most dated back to the 60s and are so slow. Because of shoddy drivers around Kyiv, accidents are frequent, every time accident happens on the tram tracks, the traffic is stopped for hours.
This painting is part of my post-Soviet series. Yesterday thought a bit about why these pictures keep coming up and realized this is why: the changes from well regulated and predictable social system having collapsed opened for the people the overwhelming choice. Unpredictability and too much choice has created uncertainty and unhappiness. I’ve been documenting it in the series how people come to terms with this in their every day life…
